Background
More than 500,000 people drown every year worldwide. Drowning is one of the most frequent causes of death among children (1-14 years).
In Western Europe alone, 37,000 people drown every year.

A beautiful coast, but with dangerous currents
In 1994, 57 people drowned in Denmark. In 2006, 13 people drowned. In 2005 in Finland, 44 people drowned. In Sweden, 20 people drowned and in Norway, 13 drowned.
Every year an estimated 600 near-drownings occur in Denmark. It is uncertain how many of these happen at the beach.
